Staying Accountable with Pure Plates

One of the most important ways to achieve and maintain your health goals is with accountability. Accountability is about accepting and keeping responsibility. For example, if you want to maintain weight, you need to work towards your goals for more than one day! Sometimes we know how to get to where we want to be, what to do, and when to do it, but there’s one last piece of the puzzle that’s missing – accountability!

Whether your goals are losing weight, managing a health condition, or feeling more energized, keep reading on to learn how to see success by keeping yourself accountable.

Write down your health goals

Whether you’re the person to write down your daily to-do lists or keep a calendar, writing down your long-term goals has shown to be effective in actually reaching them! The platform which you write down your goals is up to you and what you find will be most effective. Maybe it’s your everyday journal that you keep by your bedside. Some individuals find success by posting a sticky note on their fridge so remind themselves of what they’re aiming for. You could also try using a note function on your phone if you’re tech-savvy!

Regardless of your mode of writing, get started on your accountability by writing your goals down.

Create “SMART” goals

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. These are crucial when setting goals for yourself as they help to guide you on the right track

Specific – Make sure your goals are focused and identify an outcome.

Measurable – There should be some clear definition of success. This often answers how much, how long, or many.

Attainable – Your goal should be challenging, but shouldn’t be SO far out of your reach that you’ll never get there!

Relevant – This is about making sure the goal is worth it and aligns with your values. Think of your “why.”

Time-Bound – Any goal you set should have a target date, or else you might be tempted to keep pushing it back and back.

Some examples of SMART goals:

  • Eat 3 vegetables per day 4 times a week
  • Walk for 10 minutes 3 times per week
  • Meditate for 5 min 2 times each day

 Take things slowly

As you’ve probably heard, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Similar to setting SMART goals for yourself, take small, simple actions to reach your BIG goals! While it’s human nature to want to see change overnight, that’s usually unrealistic and sets ourselves up for failure. Think of fitness goals, for example. Maybe you want to lose weight and to get there you want to eat healthy (which we’ll discuss soon,) and work out. You decide to go “all in” and workout 7 days a week for at least an hour each day. You’re not resting, and therefore you’re more likely to tired yourself out, feel down when your goals aren’t met, and possibly give up! Instead, take things slowly – start by going to the gym 3 days a week and reflect on how increasing your physical activity makes you feel physically and mentally. This way, you’re more likely to stick with it for the long-term, and therefore sustain those behaviors.

Let others help you

Letting others help you where you need to be helped is another key factor into seeing success and reaching your goals! Others can help keep you accountable in a variety of ways. For example, by sharing your goals with others, such as your spouse or roommate, they’re more than likely to help you to reach such goals. Having a friend or family member join in on your daily health challenges can also keep you motivated.

Some work can also be taken off of you to allow you to focus on other areas of your health. Allow someone else to cook for you – like Pure Plates!
